Crying at the Discotheque

This past year has been a revival of disco music.

I first heard Alcazar’s Crying at the Discotheque at Heaven in London in 2001. The song instantly captured my attention was one of my favourites of the evening. The song of course heavily samples Sheila and B. Devotion’s Spacer which was written in part by Nile Rodgers. It is definitely infused with disco. Now there is a new version released last year from Sophie Ellis-Bextor.

Sophie’s voice certainly does the track justice and I have always admired her unique qualities. The music video is what puts this track ahead for me. It encapsulates the pandemic with empty clubs, including Heaven, and even the massive London O2.

Vaccinate, continue to be safe and we’ll see you in a disco future.
